What Are Lip Lift and Lip Augmentation?

A lip lift is a surgical procedure that improves the position and shape of the upper lip by shortening the distance between the nose and upper lip. Over time, this distance can lengthen, causing the upper lip to appear thin, flat, or aged.
Lip augmentation, most commonly performed with injectable fillers, enhances lip volume, shape, and symmetry by adding fullness to the lips themselves.
Although both procedures improve lip appearance, they work in fundamentally different ways and are often complementary rather than interchangeable.
How Do Lip Lift and Lip Augmentation Work?
Lip Lift
A small incision is placed discreetly beneath the base of the nose. A measured amount of sk in is removed. The upper lip is gently elevated and secured. The incision is carefully closed to minimize visibility over time.
Lip Augmentation (Filler)
Filler is strategically placed within the lips to restore fullness and shape. Volume can be adjusted incrementally to achieve natural - looking results. No incisions are required, and treatment is performed in the office.
Lip augmentation improves lip fullness but does not change lip position or shorten the upper lip.
Will a lip lift make my lips look unnatural?
When performed thoughtfully, a lip lift enhances natural proportions rather than creating an exaggerated appearance. The goal is subtle rejuvenation, not overcorrection.
Can I have both a lip lift and fillers?
Yes. Many patients benefit from combining a lip lift with conservative filler placement to enhance both lip position and volume. This approach is carefully tailored to maintain balance.
Is the lip lift scar noticeable?
The incision is placed beneath the base of the nose and typically heals well. Scar appearance continues to improve over several months and is usually discreet.
How long do results last?
Lip lift results are permanent, as the lip position is structurally improved. Lip augmentation results are temporary and typically last 6-12 months, depending on the filler used.
Which option is right for me?

What to Expect During Recovery
Mild swelling and bruising are expected during the first week. Sutures are typically removed within 5 – 7 days. Most patients return to normal activities within 7 – 10 days. The incision continues to mature and fade over several months.
Temporary swelling or bruising may occur for several days. Most patients resume normal activities the same day or next day. Final results are visible once swelling subsides.
